Building Public Awareness

Community Resource Days & Events

Galveston County Resource Day was devised after the devastation of Hurricane Ike, which caused widespread damage across Galveston County. APS began hosting “Galveston County Resource Day” in which collaborative partners from the county would come together to share resources for older adults and adults with disabilities who had been affected by the storm. The community support was overwhelming, which led to this one-time resource day becoming an annual community outreach event hosted by APS and supported by the Board.

The Galveston experience has led to APS and the Board hosting community resource events in other counties, to provide information and assistance to local older adults and adults with disabilities.

APS and the Board are always eager for new communities where we can hold a resource event. If you think your community may be interested, please let us know using our Contact Form.

Annual Conference

In 2007, the Board began hosting an annual day-long community education event to support awareness of APS, abuse, neglect, and exploitation, and how to better serve the needs of older adults and adults with disabilities living in the community. This event is held every June in recognition of Elder Abuse Awareness Month. This annual event is designed to bring together community partners from financial services, law, criminal justice, health care, behavioral health, and social services. We identify a lineup of speakers who can increase attendees’ awareness of challenges faced by older adults and adults with disabilities, as well as the community resources available for assisting this population. Recent conferences have drawn approximately 300 attendees. The Board has primary responsibility for developing the speaker agenda and for securing donated food, beverages, and event bags for attendees.
