Building Public Awareness

Community Resource Days & Events

Galveston County Resource Day was devised after the devastation of Hurricane Ike, which destroyed much of Galveston County. APS began hosting “Galveston County Resource Day” in which collaborative partners from the county would come together to share resources for older and disabled adults affected by the storm. The community support was overwhelming, and this has become an annual community outreach event hosted by APS and supported by the Board.

The Galveston experience has led to APS and the Board hosting community resource events in other counties, to provide information and assistance to local older and disabled adults.

APS and the Board are always eager for new communities where we can hold a resource event. If you think your community may be interested, please let us know using our Contact Form.

Annual Conference

In 2007, the board began hosting an annual day-long community education event to support awareness of APS, abuse, neglect, and exploitation, and how to better serve the needs of community-based older adults. This event is held every June in recognition of Elder Abuse Awareness Month. This annual event is designed to bring together community partners from financial, legal, criminal, medical, mental health, and social services. We identify a line-up of speakers who can increase attendees’ awareness of challenges faced by older and disabled adults, as well as the community resources available for assisting this population. Attendance has grown to approximately 300 people each year. The Board has primary responsibility for developing the speaker agenda and for securing donated food, beverages, and event bags for attendees.
